71. DO WE NEED NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS?

Humanity is going to Mars… but wait! We’re still dis-agreeing about nutrition, whether supplements are useful, about what constitutes a healthy diet, or what makes us gain weight! So, hmm… I wonder… what are we going to eat upon our journey to Mars?

Meanwhile, here on planet Earth we like to get practical. This is how I see it.

The simple advice for years has been that if we consume more calories than we burn, than we’re on the right track to gain weight. Does this make sense? No. Why not? Because calories gained from a potato or a piece of meat are not the same as calories gained from veggies and so forth. But, we reason… 100 calories is always 100 calories, right? No. Because 100 calories from meat will not absorb and be processed in the same way as 100 calories from veggies or fat. This is so simple it hurts auuchhh…

From here onward, however, it gets a bit more complicated. But do not despair, cos we like to keep it PRACTICAL 😆 . Among many things that happened to me, I have been privileged to know the people who are overseeing clinical trials of new medicine for major pharmaceutical corporations. The message there appears to be clear and it goes something like this.

(PLEASE NOTE: This is a greatly deduced and simplified summary)

Smaller mammals, such as cats and dogs, enjoy a prosperous 10-12 years of life, and then they quickly decline and die off. Humans, on the other hand, we humans enjoy a prosperous period of 30-40 years, and then we begin a slow decline, which ends in eventual deaths some 30-40 years later. What’s driving this slow decline?

Well, a slow decline is due to many factors, with the most important one (according to my research) connected to changes in hormonal balance. Example: When you’re 20 years old you can eat the whole Nutella and not notice much difference. When you’re 70 years old you can still eat a whole Nutella, but it’s advisable you eat it close to, or in, a hospital bed.

Another great example is menopause, which is due to changes in how women’s ovaries produce hormones estrogen and progesterone. The list of changes is long and bearing wide implications, but what’s the point I’m trying to make?

Well, the changes in the physical body happen on many levels. Hormones, research shows, play a leading role. Then there are other factors, for example, how the body absorbs essential nutrients, such as calcium, iron, vitamin C, magnesium… or how it creates collagen, the most abundant protein in our bodies (skin, bones, muscles etc.), or phosphorus, which is, next to calcium, the most abundant mineral in the body… the general trend in nutrients and essential minerals is, you guessed it, downwards… but hormones, starting with T3/T4 thyroid and so forth, can go either way and any unbalance can be, and usually is, a cause for an alarm…

Did you know that by many estimates, up to 70-80 percent of adults are severely deficient in magnesium, a mineral needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body? Think about it, 300 biochemical reactions, and you’re most probably deficient?!

So, let’s ask the question again: Do we need supplements?

The answer: We don’t yet have a 100% definitive answer, because we are still lacking THE RIGHT KIND of research, which is unbiased and conclusive. And yes, we’re still going to Mars, although biased and inconclusive about what we’re gonna eat on the way… But we have learned a lot from personal experience. I have been experimenting with supplements for over 20 years and can not only tell you, but show you, credibly and systematically, that I am in a much better physical condition than most of my 50 year-old contemporaries (and this picture proves it beyond any doubt! Ha!).

To summarize: If you’re age 40 or over, or if you’re experiencing unusual changes to your health, my suggestion is you check for dis-coherence (unbalance) in your body. Start by having a blood test. In view of this I will be bringing you occasional suggestions about what to supplement, why and how often.

WARNING: Beware of many so-called experts, who aim to sell you supplements at exceptionally exaggerated prices. Do your research and keep unleashing the infinite potential within!
