63. THE STORY OF MR. FAITH & MRS. REASON
Mr. Faith and Mr. Reason were inseparable friends. One day they decided to fly to the Amazon and explore the jungle. For days they cut their way through the rough wilderness. Then, suddenly, they came across an area of beautifully nurtured landscape, right in the middle of nowhere…
Mr. Faith exclaimed: Woow, there’s a gardener living our here in the jungle! Mr. Reason disagreed: No gardener is living here in the wilderness, this is the work of Nature.
Mr. Faith objected and proposed that they spend a few more days in the area and surely the gardener will arrive. So they set up a camp… Days went by and Mr. Faith waited for the gardener, while Mr. Reason used his time to improve the landscape.
But no gardener arrived, so Mr. Faith had another idea: Aha, the gardener comes only at night! Because there are no lights, we couldn’t see him! So they decided to lit up the whole landscape and spend another few days in the beautiful wilderness.
Mr. Faith was keeping a constant watch, while Mr. Reason made their stay comfortable by constructing a roof over their head and laying out comfortable beds made from dried grass… More days went by, but no gardener was spotted…
Mr. Faith thought hard and long… then he had a flash of brilliance: The gardener must be invisible to ordinary senses! Let’s install infra-red sensors, that will do the job.
So Mr. Faith and Mr. Reason proceeded to install the infrared sensors and spent a few more days under the glorious starry skies. Every day Mr. Faith examined the infra-red sensors, but to his disappointment – no gardener was detected…
Mhhmm thought Mr. Faith, there must be something we’re missing! I got it, he exclaimed! The gardener is not only invisible, but also intangible…!
By now Mr. Reason was tired of the jungle and wanted to return home. He turned to Mr. Faith and said: My dear friend, we both believe in the same thing, we just call it by different names. The only real difference is, that while you waited for the gardener to arrive, I tended to the landscape, put a roof over our heads and made us comfortable beds. When and if the gardener returns, he can make good use of these. Can we go home now?
