(Blog on… 018) GOD INTO THE 21ST CENTURY

A debate is taking place, internally and externally of religious institutions, introducing new interpretations, which can be argued scientifically.

Traditional God is no longer omnipotent, but a more merciful, patient and understanding ruler, who allows for chance and human free will. This only makes sense, as omnipotent ruler renders the whole idea of sin and redemption superfluous. God who controls every single thing and event would effectively mean we are puppets on s string and our lives, as well as everything in the Universe, predetermined.

New thinking accepts that true Love requires freedom, not control. God allowing for free will is also disassociated from horrible historic events, such as world wars, holocaust and many others, as the blame for evil deeds is transferred onto humans.

New interpretations of holy texts are also being put forward by religious individuals from within the scientific community. Kenneth Miller, professor of biology and Royce Family professor for teaching excellence at Brown University, USA, argues that acceptance of evolution is compatible with the belief in God. He sums up his bestselling book Finding Darwin’s God with the following conclusion; the trend of science is to discover and to explain, and it would be foolish to pretend that religious faith must be predicated on the inability of science to cross such a line.
