65. WHAT IS OUR UNDERSTANDING OF LIFE?

Life demands investigation, not only of its origin and structure, but also of its meaning and purpose.

Everything we are, and everything we know, is preceded by, and invariably intertwined with, a primary and deeply mysterious essence, which is life. Before we became physical, emotional, intelligent and aware, we were life, movement, infinite potential for expression. Understanding life may hold the answer to every other mystery of the world, including consciousness, and most fundamentally, it may reveal the original essence of who we truly are. So, what is life?

We think of life as something that comes and goes, is given and can be taken, that arises at time of birth and departs at time of death. But this is a childish view of reality. Our common understanding of life is, in fact, not an understanding of life, but of self-awareness, which is a specific manifestation of life, and possibly just one of its infinite variations.

This truth is clearly reflected in our interpretation of the so-called after-life. We talk about life after death, but what we’re truly expressing is our desire to remain self-conscious and to maintain our corporeal image (not necessarily in our physical composition), and our memories of the people we love, and what is important to us and so on.

Earthly life, or more specifically, life in a human form, is perhaps best imagined as an organized system of various elements or parts working together. But life in its truest essence exists on a far deeper level of being-ness. Every sub-atomic particle is in ceaseless movement, interaction, and thus is alive! That is, in fact, where life is most apparent: as an indestructible energy in constant vibration.

Such an understanding lead us to ask some deep and fundamental questions about the nature of reality, such as: Do particles become alive, or have they always been alive? In other words, could life be the absolute nature of the way it is? In other words, could life be written into the essence of the Universe?

NOTE: We explore the wondrous dilemmas about life in depth in book III and seek new interpretations about its nature, its origin, and consequently, about who we truly are.
