139. HOW TO UNDERSTAND TRADITIONAL MEDITATION?
Until we genuinely UNDERSTAND what meditation is, we will keep asking questions and never quite get the answer.
Here’s how I UNDERSTAND meditation:
What we refer to as Meditation is an INTENTIONAL effort to get in touch with our PERSONAL TRUTH: who we truly are. We like to refer to such truth as the HIGHER SELF etc., but it’s essentially just the Self.
BUT WHAT IS THIS SO-CALLED SELF?
Well, the Self is essentially a FLOW OF AWARENESS.
Hence, when meditating, we are in a state of HIGHER awareness.
HOW DID THE SO-CALLED SELF COME TO BE?
The Self came into being with consciousness, which has the need to SEPARATE “who we are” from the world in order to make sense of the world. With separation came distraction or disorder, which requires AWARENESS to put it back into order. The word “order” simply refers to an arrangement, which makes sense to us.
LET’S START SUMMARIZING:
We could say meditation is simply an EXERCISE in awareness, but this would not be correct. Why? Because I repeat again and again:
WE DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING TO BE WHO WE TRULY ARE!
SO, WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT?
Meditation in the West is being taught by people who are being taught by people who are being taught by people. And all these people are following instructions they have been given by their so-called teachers and now they are teaching others. And then there is something strange: HAVE YOU NOTICED HOW NOBODY EVER QUESTIONS TRADITIONAL MEDITATION TECHNIQUES?
In my experience, meditation cannot be taught. Others can SHOW you HOW to meditate, but ONLY YOU CAN get in touch with your truth and therefore only you can TEACH YOURSELF to meditate. Does this make sense? Only YOU have direct access to YOUR AWARENESS.
To put it simply: GETTING IN TOUCH WITH YOUR AWARENESS IS MEDITATION. So, in fact, you are always in meditation! It’s as simple as this. The rest we could say is just accessing different LEVELS of your awareness and the idea of meditation helps.
WHERE ARE WE MAKING THE COMMON MISTAKES?
Put simply, meditation is presented as some PRACTICE, which uses certain TECHNIQUES and requires and EFFORT in order to achieve some GOAL.
However, there is no GOAL or purpose (per se) to meditation and hence NO practice, effort or technique are required. Why? Because I repeat again, we don’t have to DO ANYTHING to be who we truly are.
You see, it’s just our ignorance about WHO WE ARE that’s preventing us to see this simple truth. In other words, we are taking a LONG WAY AROUND to get to where we are. If anything, we could say meditation is a practice of getting OUT OF OUR OWN WAY.
HERE’S AN EXAMPLE:
We don’t laugh or dance in order to get somewhere or achieve something. We laugh and dance because we are simply BEING who we truly are. The same is true of meditation: it’s being who we truly are.
This means there is only 1 true TECHNIQUE to meditation and that is ALLOWING. And when you grasp the power of allowing you will note that ALLOWING is actually NOT a technique, because it requires you to do NOTHING
I hope all this makes sense because it’s so simple that it’s often beyond the grasp of the complicated mind
PS: Once we grasp this basic truth about meditation, then we can tackle the TRUE POWER OF MEDITATION, which we access through GENUINE UNDERSTANDING of the world and who we truly are. PS2: Traditional meditation is great, but it’s over 6000 years old. Perhaps time for an upgrade?
