(Blog on…51) WHY INTUITION IS “NOT” KNOWING

Professionals from the book publishing industry advise: “Be smart. Don’t write about facts people don’t want to hear.” But that’s not me. I didn’t write a book to sell a million copies. I wrote it because I want to discuss the truth.

One such truth is intuition. I see so much torment in the world, because people claim to know this and that. And when they can’t substantiate their reasoning they resort to intuition. “I know my gut feeling, it’s never wrong!” they claim. Suddenly whole stories emerge. “He wanted to do that and that, she definitely meant so and so etc. etc.”

I too believe in intuition. Not because I read or heard about it, but because I researched the laws that make intuition a likely possibility, because I tested it in real life, and most of all because I personally experienced it. I believe intuition is real. It helps me notice things, it guides me, warns me. But open and sincere examination reveals intuition is NOT knowing. It simply alarms us where we need to pay extra attention, investigate deeper and so on.

The facts: Our sensory capabilities are not (yet) evolved to the level where we can intuitively know things to be factual or true. Quantum mechanics (QM) confirms this truth. (BTW, QM is the most successful theory in all of physics and has never been proven wrong.) Our reality is undetermined and this is a fact we cannot deny (unless we’re ignorant, of course). With the help of intuition we can gather facts and make better educated guesses, but we cannot be sure that our guesses represent the truth.

Here’s a quick exercise to substantiate the point:

You are given a device with two switches. Moving one switch will blow up your house, while moving the other will do nothing. I can tell you which one does what – OR – you can trust your intuition. What will you chose?

CONCLUSION: Intuition is a great help in our everyday search for truth, but it doesn’t deliver 100% accurate answers. Lets use it responsibly; know our limits.
