(Blog on…50) WHAT’S ALL THIS SPIRITUAL TALK?
Spirituality and the so-called spiritual people are everywhere. But what is the reality of this phenomena? Open and sincere examination reveals this is yet another idea in our heads. Anyone calling themselves spiritual is contradicting what the word is supposed to mean. It certainly makes us feel better when we define something as positive and good and then convince ourselves this is who we are. It gives us a feeling of belonging, defines our identity and boosts our Ego.
There’s a great quote about spirituality, which states: “Anybody who believes that sitting in a church makes them spiritual probably believes that sitting in a garage will make them a car.”
But all joking aside – is spirituality real? The facts tell us we know very little about what is real and what not. The physical world we touch, see and trust consists mostly of empty space, the mind is constructed of temporary states and the only aspect of ourselves which we can truly be sure about is the fact that we are conscious.
So who am I or you to claim anything with certainty? One illusion is no better than the next. All that’s going on is an exchange of ideas, information, and that can surely be good. And whatever illusion we embrace we are all actively (knowingly or unknowingly) working toward the same goal. Of course, there is no goal as such, because every goal is simply another piece on our path: growth.
The comforting fact about growth is that it leads only in one direction – advance. Growth is evolution and this includes spirituality. Like it or not, this is our everyday reality. The name we give it is irrelevant.
