(Blog on…41) WHY SEEK POWER?
Why do we seek power? What is it that drives our hunger for material wealth and dominance over others? Is desire for power a part of our pleasure seeking mentality or is there more to it?
We are not discussing powerful people. We are discussing people who need and seek to obtain power over other beings, the natural world or through excessive ownership of material wealth. Seeking power in the outer world is great hassle. First you go through the trouble of obtaining it and then you spend the rest of your life fighting everybody who wants to take it from you. So why bother? Open and sincere examination reveals some simple, yet disturbing facts.
Psychologists explain that people who seek power do so, because they feel powerless or feel they don’t have enough power to fulfill specific needs or desires. Their goals are never achievement of inner happiness or some greater good, but most often a pursuit of materialistic wealth, search for security and/or satisfaction of Ego. Behind the feeling of powerlessness lies a Fear of someone, something or some idea; mostly the fear of not knowing one self.
In short: We are dealing with scared, insufficient or egoistic individuals who are looking to the outside world to satisfy their needs and desires. They are unable to awaken to the happiness within, so they seek to become celebrities, join government institutions, run influential businesses or often simply perish while trying. And if by chance they succeed their illusion of power lasts only for as long as they remain blinded. Real power cannot be obtained without, it can only be awakened within. It is who we are: The all-powerful co-creators of reality.
