Are we physical beings who developed self-consciousness through natural evolution, or are we spiritual beings temporarily manifested in a physical body? The latest scientific discoveries in the particle physics, particularly the announcement of the so-called God particle (Higgs boson), present us with exciting new possibilities.

PLEASE NOTE: To fully understand what I am proposing we need some background in particle physics: the branch of physics that studies the nature of the particles that constitute matter (particles with mass) and radiation or forces (massless particles). Matter particles constitute objects, living organisms etc., and force particles mediate the fundamental forces of Nature i.e. gravity, electromagnetism, strong & weak nuclear force and latest addition – the Higgs Field. In my explanation I will leave out most of the technical details and concentrate on the facts. Anybody interested in an in-depth analysis please refer to the book.

With the arrival of quantum mechanics the strict doctrine of material science encountered consciousness. Fact: Quantum mechanics is the most successful theory in all of physics: it has never been proven wrong. Fact: Conscious observer is necessary not just to influence, but to produce reality (matter, objects etc.). Fact: Atoms, the building blocks of all matter (including our bodies), are 99,99% empty space.

THE DILEMMA: If we are empty space – what is holding us together and gives us mass?

Scientists are working around the clock to confirm the characteristics of the Higgs particle (force particle), which manifests as the so-called Higgs Field. Research is incomplete, but initial results show the Higgs Field is responsible for giving matter particles their mass. Quick summary: Matter particles pass through the Higgs Field, where they interact with and encounter resistance due to force particles, which constitute the field. Interaction or resistance gives matter particles the appearance of mass.

HYPOTHESES: We postulate:

• Consciousness too may be viewed as a force of Nature, which (like the Higgs Field) permeates the known Universe and potentially the beyond.
• Consciousness is layered over several or potentially infinite number of levels, where each level is vibrating according to specific frequency.
• Certain levels or vibrations (force particles) interact with, attune or become attached to highly evolved organisms (matter particles), such as human beings, and we experience this interaction as consciousness (conscious experience of reality).
• As we evolve we gain access to other (higher) levels of conscious experience.

This is a very short explanation of an exciting new understanding of cosmos. By combining scientific facts with spiritual experience and philosophical interpretation, we may open new avenues to understanding the Universe and who we truly are. If substantiated, this hypotheses suggests consciousness exists separate from the physical body, is not subject to death and connects all self-aware beings into one completeness. It also suggests physical reality as we know it is secondary (an illusion), while  conscious reality is primary. I don’t want to scare anybody, but scientific investigation of quantum information demonstrates this to be the fact.
