(Blog on… 003) A GROWING DYSFUNCTION
“If the structures of the human mind remain unchanged, we will always end up re-creating the same world, the same evils, the same dysfunction.” (Eckhart Tolle)
The rise of humanity from early beginnings to organised societies created social structures, rules and standards, which today serve as the foundation to who we think and believe we are. This structure is made possible by stealing from the planet and pushing the next person down. Collateral damage comes in the form of environment and the people. Winners are not the best or most qualified people, but those who are most successful at defeating competitors. The aim is to have more, thus become more. Having and becoming more is relative only to the next observer, thus the system is based on fierce competition, where the most cunning survive. This order of the world is held together by legislation and policies recognized and enforced through a judicial decision, commonly known as the law. The key to sustainability is continuous growth in material wealth. We named it capitalism.
Capitalism is powered by competition through business and business is powered by financial success. Money was created and became the mechanism behind all transactions and thus the basis of financial power. It was only a matter of time before democratically elected governments evolved into powerful businesses and the law became their most powerful business tool. In order for law to survive it needs to be absolute; above and before everything else, including above truth, fairness and justice. The law must be protected at all costs and any opposition may only be summoned upon basis of moral values. When morality fails the law becomes ultimate tool of dictatorship and oppression.
Through centuries of competition the winners evolved into global corporations. They employ financial strength to influence and secure favourable governmental legislation. Today corporations provide and control the flow of money, security and comforts. In exchange the citizens are obliged to surrender a fair chunk of freedom. Through management of money, security and comforts population is kept under control and dictated their rights. Prominent tools of control are debt, stress, fear, competition, ideals of equality and democracy, and a promise of a better future. Continuous growth is not sustainable, hence every so many years we have a correction and re-distribution of resources, where the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the planet continues to get abused. Open conflict is not popular when minority rules the majority, hence people are encouraged to seek truth and justice through judiciary systems, which are the product of the dysfunction and managed through the same principles of business and competition.
Today we complain about stress, decreasing quality of life, harmful environment, less opportunity, overpopulation, growing illness etc. In our continuous search for happiness we developed a profound need to be accepted and appreciated, thus proceeded to define rules for everything, from business relationships to what a good wife, husband and family should be. Expanding system of law and legislation is quick and affordable, while promoting moral values is slow and expensive. Over time the various law, rules and regulations became our daily reality; our knowledge, needs and judgement. They are engraved into our dysfunction, provide quick fixes, but fail to address the heart of fundamental issues, as well as deliver long-term solutions. Our dysfunction has become so acute it now forms the basis of who we are, thus we are becoming the dysfunction. Ignorance, excessive need and poor judgement are the cause of all conflict, be it social, economic, cultural, national, political or, most profoundly – personal. They have become One dysfunction; the disillusioned pursuit of happiness.
