93. UNIVERSAL INCOME TO GREATER (IN)EQUALITY?

Everybody’s talking about Universal Income (UI), the so-called guaranteed minimum income, which is a system of social welfare provision that guarantees that all citizens or families receive an income sufficient to live on, provided they meet certain conditions.

It’s a great idea and, in view of our increasing integration with technology, a necessary step for humanity. But the way I read into this, to be precise, is that UI is an effort to give the poor enough money to survive? In other words, the UI seems to be a sort of a “rich man’s feel-good” vaccine for the general public, enabling the majority of world inhabitants to survive, while the rich get even richer, but don’t have to feel so guilty about it.

What am I talking about?

Well, the idea of UI should NEVER be about people “just surviving.” But it should ALWAYS be about offering access to BEST QUALITY EDUCATION and, most essentially, offering access to EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES.

To put it simply;

“THE ONLY WAY WE CAN LOWER INEQUALITY IS BY INCREASING EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES.”

There’s not enough space here to present evidence that explains why inequality spells doom for humanity. But to put it bluntly, as long as we have inequality, we can never have peace on earth!

Lowering inequality begins with access to equal opportunity, which begins with access to best quality education. So, is it even possible to address UI without discussing education and inequality? Our politicians certainly think so.

PS: I’m still waiting for some “education expert” to expose the urgent need for teaching our children and politicians (and the whole adult population) EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE! Why? Because the devastation of human dysfunction is rarely a result of low intellect, but almost always a result of low emotional intelligence. Why then are our education systems all about intellect and so little about emotional intelligence?

QUIZ QUESTIONS:

  1. Did the world’s most ruthless dictators lack the intellect or did they lack emotional intelligence?
  2. Do we today have people in positions of great power who lack emotional intelligence
  3. Should any person who lacks emotional intelligence be allowed to become a leader to others?
