127. SOMETIMES DOING “RIGHT” CAN BE WRONG
Here’s a real-life story, which forever changed my understanding of right and wrong:
🧐
I invested 60K with my friend Alfred, who took 60K from several people and invested everything with Chris, a stockbroker from USA.
🧐
Chris was promising major returns. However, as time went by, the returns didn’t materialize. To make matters worse, Alfred developed a brain tumor and was hospitalized.
🧐
Anyway, I asked Alfred for Chris’s contact and offered to help get the money back. After several months of negotiations with Chris, I succeeded in getting my 60K paid into my bank account.
🧐
When I told Alfred about my success, he said that he promised this 60K to another investor, whose name was Greg. I didn’t know Greg and furthermore, I did all the work to get my money back, so this 60K was definitely my money. 60K was exactly what I originally invested. I successfully negotiated with Chris and he paid the 60K into my account. I knew nothing about Greg or any other investors Alfred was dealing with.
🧐
Alfred continued to insist this money was Greg’s, as this was the promise he made to Greg, period. I felt this was truly unfair. However, Alfred was a long-term friend, in a hospital with a tumor, and in need of a helping hand. So eventually I decided to share the 60K with Greg. Alfred supplied me Greg’s bank account and I transferred him 30K, although Alfred continued to insist I should send Greg the whole 60K.
🧐
Anyway, a few years later a friend calls me up and says she met this guy called Greg, who says Joe Rain stole 30K from him. I was truly disturbed by this accusation and decided to contact this Greg.So I got Greg’s phone number and called him.
🧐
Needless to say, Greg wasn’t happy to hear from me. I explained to him my side of the story and then Greg said something that truly made sense. He said:
“Come on Joe, if what you’re saying is true, which idiot would send me 30K of their money? It’s obvious the whole 60K was mine because if this money was yours, you would have sent me nothing!!!”
🧐
The lesson I learned that day will remain with me till the end of my days. Greg was right! Which idiot would send a total stranger half of their money? I was that idiot.
